This week in CTA classes, we continue developing one of the most important positions in Jiu Jitsu—the closed guard. This guard allows the bottom player to take away speed and explosiveness, forcing their opponent to carry their weight and fight from a restricted posture. A well-developed closed guard offers control, safety, and constant offensive threats, making it essential for both sport and self-defense.
We’ll begin Monday by learning how to break our opponent’s posture and attack with the kimura, a versatile shoulder lock that also opens up transitions. Midweek, we’ll dive into the cross choke, a classic and effective gi submission that works directly off collar grips. To finish the week, we’ll learn how to sweep when posture breaks aren’t working, using our opponent’s reactions to set up follow-up submissions. Whether you're aiming to control, submit, or sweep, mastering the closed guard will give you a major edge on the mats.
This week in CTB classes, our focus shifts to one of the most dominant positions in Jiu Jitsu—back control. We’ll cover both submissions and escapes, helping you become more dangerous when you have the back and more resilient when you're defending it.
We’ll start by learning how to escape when our opponent has one hook in, a critical moment to prevent full back control. From there, we’ll explore how to escape from the choking side, where the threat is highest. Offensively, we’ll study how to apply collar chokes from the back, one of the most effective and widely used submission methods in both gi Jiu Jitsu and MMA.
This week in CTC classes, we’ll continue sharpening our escape mechanics, starting with one of the toughest spots in Jiu Jitsu—escaping from north-south. Being stuck underneath in north-south is exhausting and can feel hopeless without the right technique. We'll focus on framing, timing, and hip movement to create space and recover guard or return to a safer position.
Later in the week, we’ll shift gears and explore attacking the turtle position. When an opponent turns to turtle, it's a key opportunity to control, transition, or submit. We’ll cover various ways to break them down and launch effective attacks while maintaining pressure and control. Escaping bad spots and capitalizing on transitions are hallmarks of advanced Jiu Jitsu.
