This week in CTA classes, we turn our attention to side control, one of the most common and critical positions in Jiu Jitsu. We’ll start by reviewing how to recover guard when an opponent is attempting to pass, as well as how to escape when they’ve already passed and are blocking our hips. We’ll place strong emphasis on building solid frames, using proper timing, and staying calm under pressure—keys to surviving and reversing tough spots.
Later in the week, we’ll shift focus to transitions from side control, learning how to stay tight and distribute weight effectively as our opponent tries to escape. These transitions will open the door to submissions, where we’ll focus on maintaining control before attacking. We’ll finish the week by learning how to escape the kimura from side control, a submission often used by beginners but still very dangerous if not defended properly. Solid defense and smooth transitions start here—don’t miss it!
This week in CTC class, we’ll take a deep dive into the omoplata submission, one of the more effective techniques to use against bigger and more experienced opponents. We’ll focus on proper setups, breaking posture, and controlling the position to make the omoplata a high-percentage option in your game.
To finish the week, we’ll shift gears and learn the brabo choke, one of the strongest submissions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and widely used in competition.
