In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, progress isn’t measured only by how often you win a round, but by how much you learn from it. One of the most valuable tools in learning is the tap. Tapping is not failure - it’s feedback. It tells you where the gaps are and gives you the opportunity to improve. If we let our competitive instincts take over all the time, we often avoid the situations where we struggle the most. But those uncomfortable moments are exactly where the real learning happens.
When you’re developing a new guard or experimenting with unfamiliar positions, it’s normal to get your guard passed or even submitted more often. That’s part of the process. Growth in Jiu-Jitsu requires the willingness to step outside your comfort zone and accept temporary setbacks in order to build deeper understanding. If you only rely on the positions and techniques you already feel comfortable with, your game will never become well rounded. The goal is not just to be good in your favorite situations, but to become comfortable and confident in every position.
