CURRICULUM, WEEK OF NOVEMBER 8th

November 7, 2026

Chokes and joint locks represent two completely different mechanical pathways to victory in Jiu-Jitsu, separating the art of controlling an opponent's life support from the art of isolating their anatomy.
While both force a submission, they target entirely different biological systems and require distinct tactical approaches during a live roll.
Chokes act directly upon the respiratory or circulatory systems, cutting off either the airway or the blood flow to the brain. Blood chokes compress the carotid arteries, safely reducing oxygen delivery and forcing the opponent to tap out before losing consciousness. Because they bypass an individual's pain tolerance and neutralize raw muscular strength entirely, chokes are universally considered the cleanest and most reliable finishing mechanics on the mats.
Joint locks, such as armbars, shoulder locks, and leg attacks, target the skeletal and joint structures by forcing an extremity past its natural range of motion. The armbar isolates the elbow for hyperextension, while techniques like the kimura exert severe rotational force on the shoulder girdle. Unlike chokes, joint locks rely on structural leverage against bones and ligaments, meaning they demand immediate compliance and absolute maturity from your training partner to prevent severe physical damage.
